Most of the Streamgages within the Galveston District area of operations are installed and managed by the United States Geological Survey(USGS). These gages are located at strategic locations at various streams. They measure and record the amount of water flowing in the river or stream, or its discharge. These measurements are typically recorded every 15 minutes or even more frequently during flooding events.

This data is often retrieved and analyzed by USACE Water management staff to forecast flooding as well as plan reservoir operations. The forecasts are provided to emergency managers and USACE management to make informed decisions on plans for resources to protect people and property during times of flooding.
